5月4日がつ　にちは「みどりの日ひ」という祝日しゅくじつです。

内閣府ないかくふのホームページには、【自然に親しぜん　したしむとともにその恩恵に感謝おんけい　かんしゃし、豊ゆたかな心こころをはぐくむ】とあります。

もともと、「みどりの日ひ」は4月29日がつ　にちでした。

その前まえは、4月29日がつ　にちは昭和天皇しょうわてんのうのお誕生日たんじょうびとして祝日しゅくじつでした。

でも、昭和しょうわのあと、平成へいせいになって天皇てんのうがかわると、みどりの日ひに名前なまえがかわりました。

そのあと、祝日しゅくじつを決きめなおしたとき、5月4日がつ　にちをみどりの日ひにしました。

そうすると、5月3日がつ　にち（憲法記念日けんぽうきねんび）、5月5日がつ　にち（子こどもの日ひ）とあわせて、3日続かつづくお休やすみになるからです。

ゴールデンウィークは、日数にっすうが毎年変まいとしかわります。でも、この3日にちは変かわりません。
この3日にちの前・後まえ　うしろに土曜日・日曜日どようび　にちようびが続つづいたり、振替休日ふりかえきゅうじつになると、ゴールデンウィークが長ながくなります。

「祝日しゅくじつ」って、なに？

日本にほんには独特どくとくの「祝日しゅくじつ」があります。

祝日しゅくじつとは、土曜日・日曜日以外どようび　にちようびいがいの休日きゅうじつです。

保育園・幼稚園・学校・仕事ほいくえん　ようちえん　がっこう　しごとが休やすみになることがあります。

日曜日にちようびが祝日しゅくじつのときは、その日ひよりあとの一番近い日いちばんちか　ひが休日きゅうじつになります。

"Midori-no-hi" (Greenery Day)

May 4th is a national holiday called "Midori-no-hi", Greenery Day.

The Cabinet Office's website says, (it is a day) "to be familiar with nature, to appreciate its benefits, and to nurture a rich mind."

Originally, April 29th was "Greenery Day.

April 29th had been a national holiday as it was the birthday of Emperor Showa.

However, after the Showa era, when the emperor was replaced by the Heisei era, the name was changed to Midori no Hi.

After that, at the resetting the national holidays, May 4th was changed to Greenery Day.

The reason for this was that it would be a vacation for three consecutive days,

together with May 3 (Constitution Day) and May 5.

The number of days in Golden Week changes every year. However, these three days do not change.

If it should be next to a Saturday and Sunday, or if they are substitute holidays, the Golden Week will be longer.

What is "Shuku-jitsu" ?

Japan has a unique set of "shuku-jitu", which may be directly translated as "celebration day".

Literally, they are holidays.

Nursery schools, kindergartens, schools, and workplaces may be closed.

If a holiday falls on a Sunday, the next closest day becomes a holiday.
