Field Trip (ensoku)

A field trip is an event at school when teachers take the students children out.

The Destination May Be:

  • a large park
  • a museum
  • an aquarium
  • a factory       or others.

Depending on the destination, they will take a public train or a bus. They may reserve a bus for the school.

Some preschools may ask parents to join their children for the field trip, which is a great opportunity

for the parents to get to know each other.

How Do We Know "When" and "To Where" They Will Go?
And - What Do We Need To Prepare?

The school will give "otayori" or "shiori".
The "shiori" is to provide the general and detailed information of the field trip such as:

  • Date
  • Destination
  • What time and where to meet
  • Schedule of the day
  • What transportation they will take
  • What time they will be back
  • What to bring ("mochimono")
  • What if it rains

Read it carefully with your children and prepare for the event !

This is an exemplar list of what to bring:

  • Bag (a backpack)
  • Comfortable shoes (because they will be walking longer than when they are at school)
  • Rain items (raincoats and folding umbrella)
  • Hat
  • Towel (small children will need a small case with a towel soaked in water beforehand
to wipe their hands before lunch.)
  • Bento (easy-to-eat rice balls and sandwiches are common.)
  • Water bottle (tea or water - many schools prohibit bringing juice.)
  • Snacks
  • Picnic sheet
  • Bag to collect and bring back the waste
  • "Etiquette bag"

Etiquette bag is a small paper bag with a plastic coating inside.
In case they get sick on car, train, or a bus, they can vomit into this "etiquette bag".
You can purchase this at a supermarket or a 100 Yen store, but you can make one
by putting a plastic bag in the paper bag.

Best wishes for a fun!
