「おおそうじ」ってなに？　どうしてやるの？

12月がつは大掃除おおそうじの時期じきでもあります。

本来ほんらいは、春はるのほうが汚よごれはおちやすいです。

でも、1年ねんの汚よごれを12月がつにきれいにして、

新あたらしい年としを気持きもちよく迎むかえるために家中いえじゅうを掃除そうじします。

「年神様としがみさま」という、一年間いちねんかん　家いえに福ふくをもたらす神様かみさまを新年しんねんに迎むかえるために、

という日本にほんの風習ふうしゅうでもあります。

いつもは掃除そうじしないような窓まどや網戸あみど、障子しょうじ、電気でんきのカバーのたまったほこりなども

きれいにします。数日すうじつかかったりもします。

こどもがちいさいときはむずかしいです。

すこしおおきくなったら、家族かぞくみんなで手分てわけをすることで、一緒いっしょにきれいに掃除そうじすることの大切たいせつさを、

子こどもたちに教おしえるよい機会きかいでもありますよ。

What is it and Why is whole Japan so into it?

December is also the time for O-souji, or the Year-end cleaning of the whole house.

We all know that the dirt comes off easier in warmer weather,

like spring cleaning in the western countries,  but O-soji holds a meaning to prepare the home

to welcome the Shinto deities of the New Year, which brings in happiness and luck to the house.

When you clean, you don’t just clean the physical dust and debris,

but you also clear away negative entities and evil spirits,

so it is seen as a sacred rite.

You may clean areas where you normally wouldn’t clean on the daily basis like the screens and windows,

doors and lampshades, so it may take few days to finish o-soji.

It is difficult to do this kind of cleaning when you have a small child. 

However, it’s actually a great opportunity to tell children of the importance of cleaning together the house that we live and share.
